DIRECTV Adds 3D Capability to Their HD Receivers

If you haven't already seen the news on your DIRECTV receiver; DIRECTV rolled out a new set top box update that will now give your HD Receiver (DVR and Non-DVR) the ability to broadcast 3D pictures signals.  On June 11, 2010, DIRECTV will be launching their first 3D channel in conjunction with the 2010 FIFA World Cup, ESPN 3D.  Based on the information we have received, DIRECTV plans to initially have only four 3D channels.  The launch of the other channels is schedule to happen later in the month.  Look for n3D™, DIRECTV on DEMAND 3D and DIRECTV Cinema™ in 3D.  DIRECTV Cinema in 3D is a pay channel service and those movies will be $1.00 more than other DIRECTV Cinema movies.

If you haven't read out previous post about the about 3D televisions, you may want to brush up on what exactly these new channels mean and read that post.  I'll see if I can sum up the basics for you here.

• You need three things to be able to watch 3D TV; a source (3D DVD played on a DVD player that is 3D capable or DIRECTV 3D channel), 3D capable TV, and 3D glasses that are compatible with the 3D TV.
• Home Theater Doctor (HTD) has always felt that Panasonic plasma TVs are some of the best TVs on the market today.  DIRECTV has listed Panasonics new VT25 series TVs as compatible with their 3D service. 
• DIRECTV Cinema™ in 3D will be $1.00 more per movie than the current HD movie price.
• Your DIRECTV HD Receiver will be able to detect if you TV is 3D capable.  If it's not, there will be no video and you will see an on-screen message that says, “This program cannot be viewed because this TV is not 3D capable.”
